Legal Question in Intellectual Property in California

I'm curious about the legality of using short clips of film from a television show. The idea is a parody of the show, which I would then send to the said show, in the hopes that it would make it onto the program. It would be a humorous short clip of the host, then use his voice of the video of an animale. I didn't want to make this and send it, just to get a lawsuit in return.

Thanks!

Parody is protected speech and, in most instances, is not considered copyright infringement. Having represented large studios/television production companies, I can tell you that they are careful when dealing with fans who promote their shows and in most cases won't sue them. The most you would probably get is a polite "cease and desist" if you posted the video around the Internet.

What may also happen, though, if you send in unsolicited material as a fan, is that the show would use your video without compensating you. If you expect to be paid, or want something in return, be sure to let them know.
