Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I have been given a 3 day notice to vacate my leased apartment. I am a recently divorced mom with four children (all in school) and have no place to go. My lease ended this month and will not be renewed due to previous late rental payments. The leasing agent says that if I don't leave in 3 days, the Sheriff's office will serve me a notice and I will be locked out. What is my recourse?

You were given incomplete information. The landlord must first get a judgment from the Court in an unlawful detainer action and then gives it to the sheriff who will move you out.
