Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

The apartment I live in was burglarized and ransacked last week. It turned out to be one of the other tenants 17 year old son. I have lived in the complex for almost ten years. I moved to a different unit March 2010. At that time the landlord asked me to sign a 2 year lease. I don't feel safe anymore. Can I break the lease without facing the possible penalties?

Without more information showing that the problem is likely to occur again, one incident does not seem sufficient to justify a breach of the lease, especially since the criminal responsible was caught so not able to commit the same crime for a while.
