Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I gave notice at my current rental with the impression that I had a new place to live, the landlord told me today that the listing he put up was actually illegal, and now I don't have any place to live. Can I sue the landlord for punitive damages?

No. If you can show that you reasonably relied upon him as to giving notice to your ex-landlord, you might be able to get the difference between your past rent and the higher rent at a new, comparable place plus the costs of moving.
