Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

so my landlord charged me 1000$ security deposit and 1000$ a month rent. he said my rent check had to be postmarked by the first of every month, but if it wasnt he was going to up the security deposit another 1000$. can he do that? it isnt stipulated in the contract.

If you are on a month-to-month contract, he can change any part of the agreement on 30-days notice, including requiring more deposit as long as it does not exceed the legal maximum of two times the rent. If you are on a longer lease, he cannot change it until the lease renews.
