Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Re: Landlord remodeling when not needed

I have been living in my apartment for over 10 years. Now the landlord is asking us to move downstairs so he can remodel our apartment. He just remodeled the apartment 3 years ago and I don't see the need for any repairs. The main reason I do not want to move is safety issues. My neighborhood is not the safest neighborhood and being a female living with my mom I feel safe at my current place. I will not feel safe moving downstairs because my mom is at work most of the time and sometimes works during the night. Can the landlord force us to move downstairs?

If you are on a month-to-month lease, the landlord could decide he doesn't want you as tenants anymore. He could decided to raise your rent. He could do a lot of things. If you ahv a long term lease, then he would have to wait until the end of the lease.
