Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Moved from Arlington VA to Vista CA

I moved from VA to CA the last week of November. I signed a year lease. I found a condo and bought it in San Diego. I gave the apartment complex a 2 months notice. They told me I would have to pay rent there monthly until they found tenants to replace me. Now they are saying I need to pay $8,000 in full. What can I do and what will they do? After buying a condo I don't have $8,000 lying around to pay rent in both places. Should I get an attorney? Can they ruin my credit?

You do not have to pay the full lease balance before you vacate. If you can find them am acceptable tenant, that would great. If not, you can ask them to release you from the lease. If they don't, you may be sued for the lease balance. However, the landlord has a duty to mitigate his damages by actively seeking a replacement tenant. You should get an attorney, and I'll be happy to assist. They cannot ruin your credit, but they can affect it in undesireable ways, depending on whether a lawsuit is filed or not.
