Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

I am a tenant of a house that I rent month to month from a management company.

I received a letter from the owner of the house's lawyer stating that that the owner has terminated his contract with the management company and to send future rent payments directly to the owner. The lawyer also asked me to send a copy of the lease, along with records of my rent payments.

I stopped paying rent to the management company, but sent nothing to the owner or the lawyer. It has now been four months since I have payed rent and the management company has now contacted me to find out what has happened with the rent.

Am I obligated to pay past rent if there has been no attempt to collect it in a timely manner?

Yes, you are, and you'd better clear the matter up by paying all the past due rent to the proper party immediately. If you wait to get served with a Three-day Notice to Pay or Quit, the notice should indicate who to pay and when, but you'd better pay the rent within the 3 day period or you will be served with an eviction notice. Good Luck..
