Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Tenant

I am 74 years old I live in a senior housing apt complex under HUD, I am having a problem with my new manager; she wants me to hand over a set of keys that belonged to my wife (she died 3 year ago) I am trying to explain to her that my daughter needs to come in and check on me once in a while but she states that only people that live here have a right to come in using a key, do I have a legal leg to stand on?

Re: Tenant

Is it the type of complex that has a locked front door, and the tenants get passkeys. or master keys. If so, maybe (it would depend on provisions in the lease, so I can't answer without seeing the lease. The general rule is that tenant is entitled to privacy and the ability to live in the leased property in any way tenant sees fit, subject to criminal acts, damaging the property, or being (or creating) a nuisance. The likely answer is that you are entitled to keep the keys, especially because of the reason. I would refuse to return them, subject to the circumstances I have already listed.
