Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California
My attorney wants 50% of the gross of the settlement wherein I would get less than 1% of the settlement which leaves our family homeless and destitute which the attorney knows. I consider this unethical and unprofessional as the settlement should be split, at least, evenly, or in favor of me, the client. What should I do

You don't provide enough detail about the work done to tell whether it is an unconscionable fee, but I can at least tell you that 50% appears high given the standard rate of 40%. The main issue here is whether you agreed to this in a written retainer agreement.
