Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

Conflict of interest

If the defense attorney has publicly stated that he previously had been asked by the presiding judge to due him a big favor in the name of ''public good'', and he in fact did perform the favor as asked for several years, is there a confict of interest between the two?

The resulting judges written decision and reasons appeared to have more information than what had been stated in court, leading some to believe that the judge received outside slanted information and granted a surprising decision in favor of this attorney's client.

Re: Conflict of interest

Yes, that would be a conflict of interest. This is pretty common in California, particularly Southern California where we have a fairly low quality pool of judges.
