Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

legality of signature

As a nurse I was asked to sign all of my charting using my full name as stated in my RN license. In the past I have always signed my name using my first initial and last name not including my maiden name which is hyphenated. As long as it is my signature in my own hand isnt this legal? Thanks

Re: legality of signature

As an attorney who previously specialized in defending medical malpractice actions, I have had the opportunity to review countless medical records and nurses' notes. I have never seen nurses' charting signed by a nurse's full name. I know of no regulation requiring the full name on all charting. That said, what is your concern? It may be the hospital wants to be able to easily identify potential witnesses in case litigation results. Your full signature would help your employer in that case. I know of no legal requirement, but I don't know why you wouldn't want to comply with the request.
