Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in California

Psychiatrist Negligence

I have been under the care of a psychiatrist for over 5 years in regards to my panic attacks and generalized anxiety disorder. One of the medications prescribed is xanax 3 tablets to be taken 3 times a day, this has been the situation for 5years. On my last visit, I was informed that this Dr was only going to do psychotherapy sessions and would no longer be prescribing any more medications to all patients. I feel I have become addicted and dependent on this medication, what I would like to do is not take them anymore, but I feel I may need to go into rehab, I'm scared of this, is this Dr responsible for any negligence?

Re: Psychiatrist Negligence

Is there any reason you can not see another doctor to assist with either further medications or to assist in easing off the medications? I would be very interested, as the patient, to find out why, all of a sudden, the doctor is no longer prescribing? Did he/she loose his/her license?

Much more information is needed before one can conclude if any treatment (or lack of treatment) by your psychiatrist is negligent.

It sounds like your primary concern right now should be for your health. Have you informed your psychiatrist (or any physician) of your concerns or any withdrawal symptoms? Certain medications cannot be discontinued without careful medical oversight.
