Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

Animal Bite Victim Assistance

I was recently bitten by a ferret. Ferrets are illegal as pets in California. The Ferret had got loose from its owner and ended up in my back yard. I was bitten three times and was told by a County Health Department physician I must start rabies treatments within 12 hours of being bitten, which I did.

I am unemployed and have no medical insurance. I do not know who the owner of the ferret is. I have a suspicion, but cannot prove who the owner is. The rabies treatment is very expensive -- upwards of $1500 and I don't have this kind of money. Would I be eligible for victim's assistance compensation? Is there some kind of fund or organization who can help me pay for the treatment and emergency room visits necessary for all of the treatment required? It has been explained to me that the rabies vaccine must be administered in a hospital setting because of the risk of an anaphylactxis (not sure of spelling) reaction to the vaccine.

Make an official complaint to the animal control department in your city and see if they can ferret out the identity of the owner.

If the person who was keeping this ferret could be identified, it is my opinion you would have a great case against them for your damages (medical expenses, lost time that you were not availabe to work, pain and suffering). It is also my opinion that the "owners" homeowner's insurance would cover the damages.

The rabies shots are very painful and carry a number of possible side effects.

I am VERY interested into looking into this case for you. We represent people through out the entire State of California. Consultations and case evaluations are FREE.
