Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I was in an auto accident which was my fault (not drugs or alcohol). Another car was damaged and the drive suffered some minor injuries. Apparently, they got a lawyer who is now asking me how much liability coverage I have. Should I tell them or keep quiet? In addition, I literally have nothing. I'm living from check to check and have $7K to pay in back taxes. If they come after me, will I need to get a lawyer? Any advice is appreciated.

That is why you have insurance! Call your insurance agent, and let your insurance carrier handle the claim. If need be, they'll assign a lawyer to represent your interests. Your carrier will probably want you to give a recorded statement. Do not speak with anyone else at the moment -- especially the lawyer for the driver of the other vehicle.

You should tell them the amount of liability coverage you have so they don't file a lawsuit against you where they could obtain the information anyway. If you have no assets you probably do not need to hire your own attorney and can use the attorney hired for you by the insurance company. If they get a judgment against you in excess of your policy limits, you can consider discharging the debt in bankruptcy.
