You have the right to replace your attorney, but you can't deprive your current attorney of his fee by doing so. Your contract probably says how his fee will be calculated if you fire him, and he will be allowed to file a lien against any recovery you obtain to ensure that he is paid. When you meet with prospective new counsel, they will want to know where you and your current lawyer stand financially before they will step in; if your case doesn't seem likely to result in a large recvovery, new counsel may not want to deal with the risk that there won't be enough money to cover all the fees and costs.
