Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I am hired by family members of a deceased relative to come into their home and hold an estate sale. I always ask if the homeowners insurance is current but I am still concerned if someone would get hurt while at one of my sales. Am I also liable for an injury since I am the one in charge ? We hold these sales in a retirement community and a lot of the people who come to my sales are elderly. I am concerned if they should slip and fall, for anyone coming to my sales actually. Can I be sued ? Thank you, A. Geissinger

One can always be sued, whether or not there is a strong case against you or not. Since you are the one inviting people to come to the sale and they have the right to assume that you have made sure there are no tripping or other injury causing dangers, if someone does get hurt they will undoubtedly sue you. The homeowner's insurance policy might not cover commercial sales, especially those held not to benefit the homeowner but rather the estate that he might get something from later. if you get sued, you can easily spend $10,000-15,000 on an attorney to defend you.
