Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I am a Cosmetologist and I signed a contract w/a large hair company as an independent contractor to be an educator for their products. The company sent me starter kits, (about $500 worth of products) and I was told to start using them on my personal clients so I get a feel for them and how they work. I sold all of my other products to make room for my new items.

Long story short, I never started "educating" and now the company is asking for their kits back. Nowhere in my contract does it mention anything about products or replacing, etc. Are they legally mine to keep?

I suspect that you have breached the contract -- which I haven't seen, of course -- because you did nothing to carry out your part of the bargain. The kits were not intended as gifts to you. They would be yours to keep, I suppose, if you lived up to your end of the bargain.
