Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I sub leased a bed room from a student from China, now he is going back to China and ending the lease from the apartment and the sub lease to me but he is not going to pay me back my deposit until he recieved his deposit from the apartment, but by the time he recieved his deposit, he is in China, how can I secure my deposit?

Your deposit given to him was a private agreement between you and him, and should have nothing to do with the deposit he himself gave the landlord. Without any written agreement between the two of you saying how and when your deposit should be returned, you'll just going to have to trust he'll send it to you eventually. Unless you want to sue him in small claims court but there probably is going to be enough time for that.
