Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

Several yrs ago I divorced my husb due to a gambling addiction. I had him sign a quit-claim deed to our home & had it notarized. We continued to live together as I was trying to get him to change & I did not record the deed. He is now in the hospital on life-support with no insurance & I cannot find the deed. I DO HAVE A PHOTOCOPY OF IT. Can I get the photocopy recorded so I can save my home??

The County Recorder is only supposed to accept original documents for recording. I have seen incidents where the recorder erroneously took a photocopy, after someone whited out the original and "cleaned" it up, but these are aberrations and I would not count on it.
