ss disability incom

Hi

client is on ss disability income in calif. -- she just received a inheritance of 70,000.00 which she would like to receive a 400.00 / mo. income. Will it affect her benefit & what are the limits/restrictions there thanks

Hello!

To be sure, the recipient is NOT on SSI but rather on Disability due to inability to work.

A SS recipient who is DISABLED may have "income" but not earnings. The Earnings dictate no further or continuing disability. Income has to reach a threshhold. You can check the earnings threshhold at the SSA.gov site.

A more important question, is how the inheritance is to be treated tax wise. I do not believe necessarily that the "fund" is income at all. There may be an inheritance tax on the proceeds however. check with an accountant on that issue. Interest paid on the fund is income however.
