Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in California

I have a distant cousin in poor health being prepped for heart surgery. With no other living relatives, I need to step in to handle affairs in case. I want to help but not to be responsible for any personal debts of his. Can I handle this within a medical power of attorney and advance directive? I am not sure if I am listed on his will at this time.

You can "handle" health care decisions if your cousin is unable to make his own decisions. If you are careful not to sign any paperwork accepting financial responsibility you should not be liable for his medical bills or debts. In addition, be very careful in any conversations you have with health care providers to let them know you are only exercising your medical power of attorney and NOT making any promises to pay for the cousin's care.
