Petition for succession of real property

My brother is the trustee of our mother's trust. I just received a notice from an attorney that he is petitioning for succession of real property of my mother who passed away over a year ago. He and I are the only beneficiaries. Is this something that has to be done or is there more to this than I know. He has refused to ever let me see what is going on with the trust, I have just had to take his word that everything is being done properly. What is this petition for exactly?

Have an attorney review the trust and the petition--you need to know what the trust gives you and what he's trying to do--if you wait too long, you may lose your chance to object.
