Legal Question in Workers Comp in California

I injured my back at work a little over a year ago (July, 09) while moving heaving objects during 12-2AM and have been getting Worker's Compensation but with no particular improvement and the doctors can't seem to diagnose the issue. It is not in my job description to be doing this shift and my employer once acknowledged what happened that night was a mistake of the management. I have been cater my lifestyle to the injury ever since this event took place. Because the economy, they announce that they will not be hiring night shift crew for the holiday and I am terrified being forced to do the shift again. I've been scrutinized over so much by my manager that I want to take legal actions. Please let me know what I can do to protect myself. Thank you.
