What is the purpose of a grand jury?

My sister has recieved a subpeona to testify as a witness for a grand jury. My question is what are the general reasons for needing a grand jury and wht can she expect from this subpeona? Any information would be helpful

Hello:

A grand jury may be empanelled by a prosecutor to collect testimony and evidence and to determine whether thee is probable cause to file a case in Court. Testifying in front of the grand jury is just like testifying in Court. Your sister will be sworn in and prosecutor will then examine her.

Typically, grand juries examine only serious or major crimes. Be advised, this is a formal hearing under oath and that anything your sister says can be used against her if she was in any way involved in any criminal activity. If your sister was involved in any type of crime, she NEEDS to get an attorney.
