Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Colorado

defamation of character lawsuit

I have been accused of sexual assault by a girl who wanted attention. It was investigated by the police and found to be a lie. However, in the process many people found out about the accusations and my reputation as a respectable student in my community with a 4.0 gpa and all-conference honors in football has taken a beating. Her family has little money and is known for causing problems like this as well as domestic violence and other crimes. What are the chances of me winning a lawsuit for defamation of character? Any information would help.

Thanks,

Cody Weaver

Re: defamation of character lawsuit

You could likely win a lawsuit against her, but if she has no money, then why do it. You may look to sue the police or DA if they helped to make you look bad, without full disclosure of her past problems. The news media may also be sued.

If all you want is a legal ruling against her, then you will have to pay a lawyer to get it. If there is money to be recovered, then some attorneys may do this on a contingency.
