Legal Question in Immigration Law in Colorado

My boyfriend came to the US on a visiting passport from England, filed the proper documents with immigrations to file for permanent residency. His step-mother and father are living in the states and are petitioning for him. It took 5 years for a approval letter to keep the process going, with all fees paid and filing for the visa paperwork, he is at the last step before his interview. Problem is, he is worried that because he did not go back to his country while waiting for his paperwork to get approved that there is potential for deportation is this true?
