Legal Question in Immigration Law in Connecticut

My husband of 1 month is a UK citizen who has been a permanent resident ("green card" holder) of the US for the past 3 years. Is he able to apply for US citizenship now, based on his permanent residency and recent marriage to me, a US citizen? Or, would he have to wait another 2 years, per general convention, since we have only been married one month?

As a general ruke, a permanent resident has to be a resident for at least 5 years before applying for naturalization. If married to a US citizen, this term is 3 years, but the marriage itself should be at least 3 years also. This means that he will become eligible for naturalization in 2 years based on normal 5-year residency requirement sooner than waiting for 3 years of marriage.

Hi,

Your husband will be able to apply for naturalization no earlier than 4 years and 9 months after he obtained his permanent resident status.
