Legal Question in Family Law in District of Columbia

College Education payments

I had a child out of wedlock 18 yrs ago, and we settled out of court with our lawyers about child support payments.I signed paternity papers to say i was the father. It stated that I would pay child support until the child was 21 yrs old. I have been doing that for 18 yrs now and will continue until he is 21, also medical expenses.

Now my ex girlfriend is wanting me to pay for his college expenses also. Can she take me to court to do this, after I already am paying on the original papers?

Re: College Education payments

Well, the answer starts from your original papers. Agreements pertaining to child support will often include monetary support for college and or secondary education. Read those papers again and you may wery well find that the attorneys had put some provision regarding that. if not, then you are still responsible for the support of that child until the age of 21 (law in D.C.) and that support may be increased to meet the changed financial need of your child... not to cover entirely his college education, but at least some of it, especially if there is even a vague reference in your original documents or if you can afford it.

Good luck,
