Legal Question in Family Law in District of Columbia

Single Father with Pregnant Girlfried

I want to know my legal options and financial impacts as follows:

a) if i document legally that i am the father but do not want to have this child.. does that cut my ties or free my from finanical obligation if my gf wants to have the child without my support? can i influence an abortion?

b) if we do not marry, gf gives birth and i do want to support... what would i expect to pay in child support and what are the rules? moving, share custody?

c) if i want to want full custody, does the gf pay child support to me and what are the rules?

Re: Single Father with Pregnant Girlfried

(a) You cannot influence an abortion (force one) and you cannot relinquish your parental rights for the purpose of evading child support.

(b) If your GF gives birth, in DC you would owe child support until the child is 21 or married. The amount depends upon your gross income and her situation, as well as the age of the child. There are guidelines for this under DC law.

(c) If you were to get sole custody, your GF would have to pay you child support. Normally, there is joint custody and the person getting child support varies upon the number of overnights with each parent and each parent's income.
