Legal Question in Immigration Law in District of Columbia

Marriage

I have lived in the US for 7 yrs and am currently a legal alien resident. I am planning to get married to an Afghan American and start my paperwork soon in the next few weeks. However, i am not sure about the whole process and also whether or not i would be able to travel outside of the US while my paperwork/case is still in progress? In case if i was not allowed to travel, how long would it take before i can travel outside of the US? Also, what is the requirement for getting married in the District of Columbia? Do i have to apply for a marriage license or a marriage certificate? How much will the whole thing approximately cost?

Re: Marriage

My first question is do you have a good immigration attorney. The process you are about to go through is a legal process -- a mistake could not only be costly, but could destroy any change of your future spouse getting legalized in the U.S. You are a lawful permanent resident about to marry a non-citizen of the U.S. -- she cannot adjust in the U.S. until her visa petition becomes current, or until you become a citizen and she becomes an immediate relative (in which case she can adjust her status here provided she entered the U.S. legally). Either get your citizenship, or I advise marrying her in her country, and filing a petition on he behalf. There are few "approximate" costs -- we would look at the whole case before we agree to anything. If you haven' got a good lawyer, call my office.
