Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Debt collection

A collection agent is trying to collect a debt that I feel is unfair. The original debt was $7000 for a forty mile EMS Helo ride to the hospital. The insurane company paid $3600 and We've refused to pay any more. The collection agent is threatenig to go one step further. What can he do? Is there a statute of limitation and what can I do to help myself?

Re: Debt collection

The statute of limitations is five years.

You probably also have a defense that your insurance company, acting as your agent, has settled the claim. The law doesn't allow a creditor to accept settlement from an agent then turn around and go after you directly, though I'm seeing collection agents try this more and more.
