Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Deceased mother's medical bills

My mom was in the hospital for a month before I brought her home via Hospice, where she passed away. When she was admitted, she signed everything & had Medicare & United Healthcare to cover her. While there, I had to gain financial power of atty to get my name jointly on her checking & money mkt accounts. My understanding is that upon her death, the power of atty is null. The medical bills are now starting to arrive. I see by other responses on this forum that I am not responsible, but her estate is. Her estate consisted of those two accounts, 2 life insurance policies (of which I was beneficiary), and our house (which has outstanding mortgage of $28k and is now in my name after quickie probate). She left no will and I believe that the documents I signed in the hospital were for medical procedures only. After knowing all of the above, will I be held responsible for those bills?

Re: Deceased mother's medical bills

No, you are not responsible for the debts. The life insurance the hosp cannot touch. I am not sure about the house, since a lien may have attached to it and notice of probate to the creditors is also required. See the attorney who handled the probate for you on that.
