Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Electric Billl

I have had my electric turned off because on non payment. Its been 4 years and the amount is $6,014.72. I'm disabled and have to be on oxygen and Bi-pap machine because of severe sleep apnea and hypoxemia. I also have COPD and congestive heart failure because I wasn't put on my Bi-Pap after surgery. I have a Dr's statement stating I won't live longer than one day without elec.I never received a bill except e-mail telling my bill was ready for viewing. I didn't pay attention because I thought it was being taken out of my checking account. The elec. is turned back on, I borrowed $200.00 to put on the bill, but I can't afford the balance. I only make $7,708.00 per year. What should I do? I have gone to local agency's but they can't

help much. Is there a legal approach I can use? I don't understand why they waited 4 years before turning it off. Thanks for any advise

NOTE: This communication is not intended as and should not be interpreted as legal advice. Rather, it is intended solely as a general discussion of legal principles. You should not rely on or take action based on this communication without first presenting ALL relevant details to a competent attorney in your jurisdiction and then receiving the attorney's individualized advice for you. By reading the "Response" to your question or comment, you agree that the opinion expressed is not intended to, nor does it, create any attorney-client relationship, nor does it constitute legal advice to any person reviewing such information, nor will it be considered an attorney-client privileged communication. If you do not agree, then stop right here, and do not read any further.

Keep contacting every governmental agency you can. Unfortunately, there is no magical legal cure to solve your financial problems. You could file for bankruptcy and the debt would be discharged but I am not certain that the electric company would then be required to continue to provide electricity.

I would seek legal advise of a qualified bankruptcy attorney who can review your situation and give your further information on this matter.
