Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Florida

Liability for credit cards

In 46 years of marriage, my husband handled all our financial matters. A year and a half ago, after he was put in the hospital, I had to take over. I was shocked to learn that he had been paying on 18 credit cards! I never applied for any of these cards. My husband passed away recently. My question is this: Am I in any way legally responsible to pay for this debt which I had no idea he had incurred prior to my taking over the bill paying? He left only a $10,000 life insurance policy. Thank you for any information you can give me.

Re: Liability for credit cards

If they were his cards his estate is responsible for payment. Life insurance is an exempt asset, which means creditors cannot reach the proceeds..if the estate was not the named benificiary.
