do i need an attorney

i filed temporary custody for my granddaughter who has resided with me since she was 3 months old. she is going to be 3 soon. my daughter and the father have both given written consent and i have a court hearing date. the dept of family and children is involved with my daughter and her youngest child due to domestic violence, drugs etc. that child remains with the mother. she has to appear before the court for an arraignment on charges involvng baby number 2. child endangerment. with this is mind can i go ahead and ask for permenant custody and will i need an attorney to represent me. dcf has done a full study on myself and my home and they are willing to go to court with me for support. what are my chancesof gaining custody?
