Legal Question in Immigration Law in Florida

Change of Status

I am a Honduran citizen currently on an H1B visa. This visa expires on August 1, 2000. Since I would eventually have to change my status when I got married, my boyfriend and I are wondering if it would be advisable to get married before the expiration date on my visa, and if it would allow me to remain in the country.

If this would allow me to stay in the US, would it allow me permission to work? I am currently employed as a teacher for a public school district. Our school year begins in early August, but staff placements are made in May. My principal is very flexible, but for obvious reasons the central office cannot have my name on active payroll without legal authorization from INS.

Re: Change of Status

It depends. What is the status of your boyfriend? Contact me with further information. Also, is the August 2000 expiration your first? Or, have you used up the six years? If it is only a 3 year expiration you may be eligible to extend for an additional 3 years.
