Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Florida

Suing my landlord.

My mother was renting a place and was out of town for three weeks. When I went over there to paint for her, everything was gone. He said he thought she moved. She paid First and last and never was late, he returned the September rent check, but she was still paid till Oct, 16, because she paid first and last when she moved in. He threw everything away. Including things we made for her as kids, cloths, linens, pictures, expensive cookwear, EVERYTHING! She never said she was moving or gave any indication she was moving. She only left to help a family member. Besides the rent was paid. The only thing is they never had a lease. He has an apartment license not a motel hotel license. He never gave an eviction notice or called to verify if she had moved. He just took matters in his own hands and threw everything away. What can we do? What can we sue for? Do we have a case?
