Legal Question in Medical Malpractice in Florida

I gave birth in Dec. 2008. I was left with a rectovaginal fistula due to negligence and had to have follow up surgeries. In April 2009 I had to have a laparoscopic loop ileodtomy with gracilis transposition. During the healing process I had to where an ostomy pouch. Three moths later the pouch was removed and I was left with scars up and down my inner thigh and on my stomach. Plastic surgery to help conceal the scars would be $3900 and I have paid, out of pocket, over $4000 in medical bills and insurance costs. I was advised by an attorney who knows the Dr. to write a personal letter asking for these reimbursements. Is this appropriate or what should I due. I know my time is running out.
