Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Florida

I am building a custom home. I started the project over 2 years ago and it is still not complete. The builder has had a mountain of issues due to the economy, suppliers, contractors, designers, etc. The house ended up being constructed at a higher square footage than we contracted for. Is the builder able to charge us for the additional square footage? We have had a myriad of problems and have had to make so many concessions for this builder and given the decline in the worth of the house over the past couple of years, we don't feel we should have to pay for it because we didn't sign on the dotted line.
