irs claims I have income i did not have

the irs sent a request for tax payment on income they say I earned in 2002 that I never earned how do I prove I never earned something. I only have my w4's from what I did earn.How did they come up with 20,000 more than I actually earned?What do I do?

Call 1-800-829-1040 and ask for your income information for that year. They may be able to fax it to you. That record will show you what the IRS believes you made that year and where the income came from. Depending on what their mistake is, you can then take action to correct them. I do not know at what stage they are concerning collection and whether they have given you any time limits yet, so you need to do this immediately.
