Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Georgia

First time offenders firearms rights.

I pled guilty for my best intrests in 1997 for defending myself against my father after he pulled a gun on me. I was eligable for fist offenders and after my probation was up I received discharge papers from my probation officer. I had an Attorney at my hearing. The exact charge was aggrevated assult ( Family Violence Act).

Now My Attorney said to apply for a liscence through probate court. I don't need a liscence to own a gun. The ATF won't return my emails and the sherriffs office won't give me a straigh answer. Can I purchase a fire arm?

I don't see how it could have been in your best interests to plead guilty to something for which you had a real self-defense claim, but ok.

The laws governing firearm registration are going to be contained in a pamphlet at your sheriff's office or state website. Go get one and see if the restrictions apply to you.

If they seem to, then you're right, you're going to have to apply for some sort of waiver through the courts if you want to buy a regulated firearm.

Persons convicted of domestic violence and whose names are placed on the national register are prohibited by law from legally possessing firearms ever again.
