Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Georgia

Credit Report from old 1991 gym account

I had an old Gym Account back in 1990 and closed in 1991. The contract I signed in 1990 stated that if I moved over 30 miles away from the gym that I would need to write a letter, send proof of new address in order to break my contract. I provide all of this information to the gym in 1991. Now 2 months ago, I was contacted from a collection agency stating that I owed them $800 for this broken contract. I asked them to send the contract to me along with the information I sent to the gym back in 1991. They have yet to send it to me. Promblem: I am buying ahouse in 2 months and this is now on my credit report. How can I get them to remove this? This is affecting my credit score and how could they have just placed this on my record. This is an old paid account from 1991. I have search my records for this closed account but did not find my paperwork from 14 years ago. What can I do? Also, please note that I resided in Virginia when this occured.

Re: Credit Report from old 1991 gym account

The creditor and their collection agency is apparently commiting a serious breach of the law, as is the credit bureau. Items over seven years old, valid or not, may not appear. Do a written challenge to the credit bureau and report the collectors at www.ftc.gov .
