Legal Question in Family Law in Georgia

My original birth certificate and social security card are both listed as John Ross Smith. After a legal adoption at age 1, I became John Ross Smith Jones (also with a new legal birth certificate and social security card). Now, as an adult, I want to drop 'Jones' and continue as listed on my original birth certificate, 'Smith'.

Here is my question: Do I HAVE to go through the court system just to drop the last name? (I still have both original birth cert. and s.s. card) Or can I just start signing it that way after notifying my employer, bank, creditors, etc.?

You will create many problems if you do it without a court order.
