Legal Question in Immigration Law in Georgia

Transfer from J-1 to F-1 visa

I am originally from Bulgaria and I am in Georgia on a J-1 visa, which expires on August 1, 2002. I would like to study for my MBA at a university in USA and I need to change my status to F-1(student). Can I go to Mexico before the expiration of my J-1 visa and apply for F-1 visa? If I am rejected a F-1 visa in Mexico, can the US Embassy in Mexico annul my J-1 visa so that I cannot turn back to US? If I am rejected a F-1 visa in Mexcio, can I apply for a change of status from ''Exchange''(J-1) to ''Student''(F-1)?

Thanks!

Re: Transfer from J-1 to F-1 visa

The answer to your question depends on whether you are barred from changing status if the J-1 has a 2 year foreign residency requirement (check the visa for 212(e)). If not, you can try to change here in the states. Email further questions to [email protected].
