land dispute
my husbands grandfather past away about 6 years ago and did not leave a will. he jointly owned about 1/2 an acre of land with my mother-in-law and her sister-in-law is trying to take the land from her.
how is this handled and what can we do about it?

This question cannot be answered without more information, such as:
1. What kind of "jointly owned"--tenants in common or joint tenants with right of survivorship?
2. How is sister in law "trying to take the land"? Is she claiming an interest by intestacy and seeking partition or some other remedy?

The best approach is to employ a real estate attorney to assess the situation/advise you of your legal options. My firm does this type of work. My experience is that the longer you let an issue like this go, the more difficult it becomes to solve.

As stated, get a lawyer. By far, the best option is usually someone who practices estate law as a specialty (not a lawyer who merely claims to hendles these types cases), and a lawyer who practices in the local area. Ask for referrals from trusted friends or local lawyers.
