My father died in '97. We were neither aware of the other. Can I sue for his estate, which has been previously settled?

Suing for what? Are you trying to claim a share of his estate? If you were "unaware" of the fact that he existed, does this mean you were born out of wedlock? If that is the case and you were never legitimated, then the answer is no. However, there are no relevant details in your post. You also do not indicate where your father lived at the time of his death. Different states have different laws and since no attorney knows the facts and what you are trying tos sue for, my advice would be to contact an attorney in the county/state whrere your father resided at the time of his death. If you are trying to claim a share of inheritance, speak to a probate lawyer but my guess is that you are not entitled to recover.
