Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

When I graduated from H.S., my uncle told everyone at a XMAS gathering that if I got my Bachelors in 4 years, and did not drink or do drugs, and got into law school, he would pay for law school. We had a falling out over another family issue, and now he refuses to pay. Can promissory estoppel be enforced?

his promise, I believe, is unenforceable. you may not want to hear this but the last thing you want to do is hire some lawyer and sue a family member. the family would be irreparably harmed for years. life is very short and you want to minimize potential regrets. whatever the family issue is, it needs to be forgiven. my guess is that everyone will feel better then. hope this helps.

Terry is absolutely correct. I also think that you would look pretty odd in court saying that you you relied on that promise and therefore bettered yourself by gettign a degree, not smoking, not drinking and getting into aw school. However, if you had other opportunities that you did not pursue and as a result you can establish damages, you might have a valid argument. I beleive that you would have a difficult case.
