Legal Question in Business Law in Illinois

LLC start-up

My husband is a mechanic who wants to start his own business building engines and selling after market upgrades and parts. I make various arts and craft projects and want to start a business selling these things. My question is... can we go together and start one all encompassing LLC with service and retail or do we each have to start a separate business considering the differing products that would be sold. Thank you for your time.

Re: LLC start-up

You could have one LLC. The problem is if one component of the business does well and the other fails, the successful component would be responsible for the debts of the unsuccessful component. In a perfect world, you would want two LLCs, but in Illinois, the fees to start and maintain LLCs are rather cost-prohibitive.
