Legal Question in Consumer Law in Illinois

Repair Scam?

Our company took our camera to a repairman and asked for an estimate. He told us it would be $350 plus parts and that there was no way he could know the cost of parts unless we paid him the $350 to take the camera apart. We said go ahead and he called days later saying he went ahead and fixed it for $1835. The cost of a new camera would be $2200. We did not authorize these parts. He refuses to send proof of purchase or a copy of his reciept for the ''parts'' stating that this is ''personal information''. He told us the list of parts, none of which can I find any reference to online in repair forums or on the camera's manufacturer website. He is keeping the camera and says there is nothing that can be done; we must pay the $1835. Is what he is doing legal? Can he force us to pay for parts we did not authorize and refuse to show proof that he even purchased these alleged parts?

Re: Repair Scam?

I do not think it is unreasonable for you to require an itemized list of parts used to repair the camera. If he refuses to budge, your only recourse may be to sue him in small claims for the value of the camera.
